So everyone who gives advice online says to be polite, respectful, and to ask for a break.  And that is all true. But here is something that will prevent you from getting a traffic ticket in New York City and some of the larger cities and counties where there are many precincts and police officers.

A PBA card.  Plain and simple. If you know a police officer and they give you a PBA card, use it wisely.  A PBA card is a card from their union that is given to family and friends to help them get some courtesy from a police officer who might otherwise give them a traffic ticket if they didn’t have one.  Now if you have one of these cards, it does not mean that you can do whatever you want in a car and get away with it.  They can be taken away, and a traffic ticket can still be issued even if you have one.

One tip though, make sure you present to the officer before he/she walks away from your car because when they come back, the traffic ticket might have already been written.

Now what if you don’t have one of these PBA cards? Here is what works almost 90% of the time (unless you get a real hard nose traffic ticket writer).  I know this guy, who when he gets pulled over, tells the officer that his brother is “on the job”.  He makes up a name and a precinct and says that he left his PBA card at home or in the other car or something like that.  He’ll even offer to call his “brother” while he is stopped so the officer can talk to his brother (the call never goes through of course).  He is so convincing that he gets a break almost every time he gets pulled over.  And he drives for a living in the city. The chances that the officer will ever check on your story are slim to none. So don’t worry about that.  You see a police officer does not want to write a traffic ticket to another officers family member.  Think about it, would you want yours if you were an officer.  Probably not.

Now we are not telling anyone to lie to the police, because in some cases this can be a crime.  But this guy tells a little white lie and it works for him.  Good Luck.
